Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-88)

Basquiat was a self-taught artist who first gained attention for his graffitti in New York. He worked with Andy Warhol and gained international recognition. Coming from a mixed race background -- his father was Haitian-American, his mother was Puerto Rican -- Basquiat used his heritage as inspiration in his work and is credited with bringing the African-American and Latino experience to the high-art world. He died at the age of 27 of a drug overdose, but his short-lived career has had profound effects on the international art world
