Black History Month

Toni Morrison (1931- )

A Nobel Prize laureate, Toni Morrison explored the black experience in all of her work. Born in 1931, she began her career in academia before becoming senior editor at Random House in 1965. She published her first novel, "The Bluest Eye," in 1970, and developed a strong following for her storytelling and sharp observations. In 1988 she won the Pulitzer Prize for the work "Beloved," named the best novel of the past 25 years by The New York Times Book Review in 2006. She received the 1993 Nobel Prize in Literature, making her the first African-American to be selected for the award.
